Kotor sits at the innermost tip of the Bay of Kotor on Montenegro's Adriatic coast. Its UNESCO-listed walled Old Town is a triangle of lanes around the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, the Sea Gate and the Gurdić Gate. The paid city walls climb to the ruined Fortress of San Giovanni for a 360° view of the inner bay; allow 1.5–2.5 hours. Plan 3 days without a car, 5 with one.

Good to know

  • Tivat Airport, about 8 km away
  • Bus station a few minutes from the Old Town
  • About 1,350 steps to the fortress
  • Ladder of Kotor trail free

Why visit Kotor

  1. Boat to Our Lady of the Rocks

A man-made islet off Perast with a church holding a revered 15th-century icon. Short boat trips from Kotor stop there; some continue to the Blue Cave.

  2. A fjord-shaped inner bay

Drive or scooter past Dobrota, Perast and Risan, cross on the Kamenari–Lepetane ferry and return via Stoliv and Prčanj.

  3. Cable car to Lovćen

The Kotor–Lovćen Cable Car rises to the national park: the Njegoš Mausoleum, an alpine coaster and hikes around Ivanova Korita. Give it its own day.

  4. A town known for its cats

Kotor's street cats are part of the town's identity, and you will meet them in the Old Town's squares and lanes.

Things to do in Kotor

When to go

  1. March–May

March still feels wintry; by May it is warm and clear. Thinner crowds make it a good time for the Old Town and the fortress climb.

  2. June–August

Hottest, driest and busiest, with days around 30°C and peak cruise traffic. Boka Night boat parade, Perast's Fašinada and the KotorArt festival.

  3. September–October

Warm and calmer, often rated the best window with late spring. The International Klapa Festival brings a cappella singing to Perast.

  4. November–February

Mild but very wet, with November–December the rainiest months. Quiet and cheaper, though some restaurants and boat tours close. Carnival events in winter.

Practical tips

  • Check a cruise port schedule and see the Old Town early, late or on days with few ships in port.
  • Start the fortress climb early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds.
  • The free Ladder of Kotor trail, the paid walls and fortress route and the cable car are three separate things.
  • Coming from Dubrovnik, leave early to avoid slow summer border queues, and buy your return bus ticket at the Kotor bus station counter.
  • Tivat Airport has no night landings, so late flights divert to Podgorica, about 2 hours' drive away.
